Dress Code & Policies

We are fortunate to have a beautiful clubhouse, a gorgeous golf course in excellent condition, a membership of the highest quality, and an exceptional staff. We also have a great variety of events and activities for the enjoyment of our members and guests. As a professional courtesy among the members, we should maintain the traditions and good taste that distinguish our Club. To that end, please comply with these guidelines for proper attire. Members are responsible for ensuring that their family and guests are informed of the Club's policy on attire and are dressed appropriately.

IN THE CLUBHOUSE

  • Wine Room – Business Attire preferred, jackets advised for gentlemen
  • Terrace Room – Business Attire or Country Club Casual (except athletic attire)
  • Donald Ross Lounge – Country Club Casual
  • Elmer Smith Room – Country Club Casual
  • Ballroom – Business Attire
  • Old Lounge – Business Attire
  • Upper Terrace – Country Club Casual
  • Mixed Grille – Country Club Casual
  • South Lawn and Patio – Country Club Casual

Black tie and black tie optional are appropriate when designated for formal events. Ladies may choose formal or cocktail attire. Business Attire is appropriate throughout the clubhouse on a regular basis.

  • Classic business suits and shirts for gentlemen.
  • Classic business suits, pant suits, dresses, skirts and jackets for ladies.

Country Club Casual is appropriate throughout the clubhouse on a regular basis.

GENTLEMEN (and young men 17 years and over)

  • Shirts: dress, golf, tennis and platform tennis collared shirts, banded collar (crew or V-neck), turtlenecks and mock turtlenecks.
  • Outerwear: jackets, blazers, sweaters, vests, athletic windbreakers, warm-up and golf rain suits.
  • Pants: slacks, shorts, athletic attire per the specific sport's dress code.

LADIES (and young women 17 years and over)

  • Dresses, suits, pant suits and skirts.
  • Tops: blouses, shirts, golf, tennis and platform tennis collared shirts, banded collar (crew or V-neck), turtlenecks and mock turtlenecks.
  • Outerwear: jackets, blazers, sweaters, vests, athletic windbreakers, warm-up and golf rain suits.
  • Pants: slacks, shorts, athletic attire per the specific sport's dress code.

General

  • Gentlemen must remove their hats, visors or caps when entering the clubhouse, except in the Mixed Grille and Locker Rooms.
  • Restricted footwear: soft spike golf shoes are restricted to the Golf Shop, Locker Rooms and Mixed Grille. Tennis shoes (flat light colored soles) are restricted to the Golf Shop, Locker Rooms, Mixed Grille, Donald Ross Lounge and Terrace Room.
  • Blue denim is permitted in the Mixed Grille, Donald Ross Lounge, and when making a salad at the Salad Bar.
  • All trousers or pants must fit appropriately on or at the waist and must not be ripped, torn, frayed, soiled or inappropriately loose or tight. Undergarments may not show.
  • Clothing that exposes the midriff is only permitted at the swimming pool complex.
  • Clothing with words and/or graphics referencing profanity and/or offensive language is not permitted at the Club.
  • Members are responsible for ensuring that their family and guests are informed of the Club's policy on attire and are dressed appropriately.
  • Exceptions: These rules may be waived by the Board of Governors and/or the COO/General Manager for specific costume and theme parties and events and extenuating circumstances.

SPORTS ATTIRE

The athletic programs sponsored by the Country Club of York conform to their national organizations. Hence, the attire prescribed here is considered appropriate for participating in our Club's sports programs. Members are responsible for ensuring that their family and guests are informed of the Club's policy on attire and are dressed accordingly.

Golf Attire

Appropriate golf attire contributes to the tradition, decorum, and dignity of our Club and applies to the golf course, practice areas, putting green and golf shop. Members must ensure that their family and guests are informed of the Club's policy on attire and are dressed appropriately. The Golf Professional will be the final judge as to whether or not a member's or guest's attire is in accordance with the intent of this policy.

Men

Appropriate attire for men and junior boys includes the following: polo-type shirts with collar, turtlenecks or mock turtlenecks. Sleeves may be long or short. Golf shirts must be tucked in at all times. Slacks and Bermuda shorts are acceptable, not to exceed 4" above the knee. Hats, visors, and caps must be worn peak forward and must be removed when entering the clubhouse, except in the Mixed Grille and Locker Rooms.

Inappropriate attire includes the following: t-shirts of any kind, tank tops, cargo pants or shorts, athletic pants or shorts, cut off slacks, drawstring pants or shorts. Denim of any kind or in any form or color is not permitted.

Women

Appropriate attire for women and junior girls includes the following: Traditional golf attire, jewel necklines, turtlenecks or mock turtlenecks are permitted. Slacks, shorts, skorts, culottes or Capri pants are acceptable. Knee length is preferred not to exceed 4" above the knee.

Inappropriate attire includes the following: t-shirts of any kind, tank tops, low scoop necklines, low v-necklines, halter tops, spaghetti-straps, cargo pants or shorts, athletic pants or shorts, lycra, leggings, drawstring pants or shorts. Clothing shall not reveal midriffs or undergarments. Denim of any kind or in any form or color is not permitted.

Golf Shoes

Appropriate shoes include those that have approved soft spikes or dimpled soles. Sneakers are permitted.

Inappropriate shoes include shoes with metal or ceramic penetrating spikes or any footwear that may cause damage to the golf course or practice areas. Golf shoes are restricted to the Golf Shop, Locker Rooms and Mixed Grille.

Tennis Dress Code

Proper tennis attire is to be worn. Collared shirts or tennis t-shirts and appropriate shorts for tennis are required. Tennis sneakers are required on Har-Tru courts at all times. Basketball sneakers may be worn only on hard courts. Members are responsible for ensuring that their family and guests are informed of the Club's policy on attire and are dressed appropriately.

Platform Tennis Dress Code

Players must wear "sneakers" (tennis shoes, boating shoes etc.). Rubber soled street shoes are not permitted on courts. Members are responsible for ensuring that their family and guests are informed of the Club's policy on attire and are dressed appropriately.
